Images of «Byl»

Home

The series of paintings “Images of “Byl”” is based on the archive of photographs of the citizens of Stary Oskol, made in the period before the change of the millennium (2000). The variety of cultural life around the cinema determines the choice of images: the surrounding areas, winter scenery, discos. The park area and the square in front of the entrance were the center of leisure and recreation for the townspeople, and in the evening in the basement of the cinema, the iconic discos «Animals» were held. One of the recognizable locations appearing in the series, Gorynych-Gorka, was conceived by Nadezhda Stakhurskaya and Olga Osetrova, and subsequently made at the factory specifically for the year of the dragon.

In this series, Ekaterina Gerasimenko seeks to convey the feeling of the past time and the ephemeral anxiety of the haze of the past. Paying special attention to the themes of place and memory, the artist tried not to deviate too much from the images in the photographs in order to maintain historical authenticity. However, passing into the medium of painting, the images change somewhat; become similar to the images from our memories, which are distorted over time.
